Wall Tie Replacement on Hayling Island Sorting Office – A Historic Project in Hampshire
In February 2023, 1st Master Wall Ties undertook a significant wall tie replacement project at the Royal Mail sorting office on Hayling Island, located in Hampshire. This project was initiated after the main contractor, Build 4 Growth Limited (B4G), discovered structural issues during their work to remove and repair cracked render on the building’s front elevation.
What initially appeared to be defective render turned out to be a more serious structural problem. As B4G removed the damaged render, they noticed that the gable end of the building was visibly moving, prompting them to halt all works immediately. Upon further inspection, it became clear that the horizontal cracks, which were spaced around 450mm apart, indicated wall tie failure. At this point, B4G called upon our team at 1st Master Wall Ties for a thorough wall tie inspection, given that we are the only Wall Tie Installation Federation Member in Hampshire.
Wall Tie Failure Inspection on Hayling Island
Our experienced wall tie surveyor arrived on-site equipped with endoscopic equipment to conduct an in-depth inspection of the existing wall ties. After a detailed investigation, it was confirmed that the wall ties had completely failed and snapped within the cavity across all elevations of the building. We documented our findings in a comprehensive report, which was then shared with B4G and passed on to the client for approval.
Wall Tie Replacement Process at Hayling Island Sorting Office
Once the client approved the work, we swiftly mobilized a team of expert technicians to carry out the wall tie replacement at the Hayling Island sorting office. Given the age and condition of the brickwork, it was decided that a resin tie solution would be the most effective method. This approach not only provided the necessary structural reinforcement but also ensured the longevity of the repairs. All original ties were isolated to prevent further damage and to stabilize the building’s structure.
While working on the project, local residents shared that the building had a rich history, having once served as a cinema. Our team discovered that remnants of the original projector room and cinema screen were still intact, adding a fascinating layer to the project. Interestingly, through careful study of the building’s materials and tie patterns, we determined that the front façade was of a different age compared to the rest of the structure. Despite extensive research, we couldn’t uncover the reason behind this anomaly, and we welcome any insights into the building’s history.

This wall tie replacement project was not only technically challenging due to the building’s age and condition, but it also gave us the unique opportunity to work on a historic piece of Hayling Island’s heritage. The Royal Mail sorting office stands as a significant landmark, and ensuring its structural integrity was both an honor and a responsibility for our team.
