Comprehensive Wall Tie Replacement for The Bay CE Secondary School – Isle of Wight and Hampshire
In September 2021, 1st Master Wall Ties undertook a significant and challenging project involving the full refurbishment of The Bay CE Secondary School on the Isle of Wight, an important location in Hampshire. Commissioned by the Department for Education, this project was crucial due to the school’s urgent state of disrepair, which necessitated comprehensive external and internal repairs. The refurbishment was managed by Morgan Sindall, and we were selected for the specialized task of wall tie replacement and crack stitching throughout the entire school.
The Refurbishment Project
The scope of the project required extensive coordination with various contractors to ensure every aspect was completed efficiently and to the highest standards. Our approach involved regular meetings and thorough planning to manage the project’s complexity and ensure seamless integration of our work with that of other contractors. A significant challenge was that the school remained operational throughout the refurbishment. This meant that our team had to work around the school’s schedule to minimize disruption to students and staff, all while adhering to rigorous safety protocols. Balancing the needs of an active educational environment with the demands of a large-scale refurbishment required careful planning and flexibility.
Wall Tie Replacement and Crack Stitching
For the wall tie replacement component of this project, we opted for resin wall ties. These were chosen for their superior strength and durability, which met the client’s requirements for high-quality and long-lasting repairs. The existing wall ties were completely removed, and new resin ties were installed to provide robust support for the building’s structure. Additionally, we addressed the school’s crack stitching needs, which involved reinforcing the masonry to ensure stability. Given the relatively large joint sizes (between 10-15mm), we isolated the old ties and repointed the joints with high-grade mortar. This meticulous approach ensured that the repairs were not only effective but also durable, providing a long-term solution to the structural issues.
Project Duration and Client Satisfaction
The entire wall tie replacement and refurbishment project for The Bay CE Secondary School took approximately 18 months to complete. This timeline included careful planning, execution, and final inspections to ensure that all work was done to the highest standards. The successful completion of the project not only met but exceeded client expectations, demonstrating our commitment to quality and client satisfaction. Working with Morgan Sindall and the various contractors involved in the project was a highly rewarding experience. We are proud of the outcome and look forward to future opportunities to collaborate on similar projects.
