Crack Stitching at Portsmouth’s Kings Theatre
In late 2023, our team had the privilege of working with DM Habens Ltd on a vital project at Portsmouth’s iconic Kings Theatre. This beloved venue, which holds a special place in the city’s cultural landscape, was undergoing a major restoration involving full lime repointing. During this meticulous process, we uncovered several significant horizontal and stepped cracks in the brickwork which was evidence of historical structural movement that needed urgent attention.
Effective Crack Stitching for Long-Lasting Results
Addressing these cracks required more than just a cosmetic fix; it called for crack stitching, a specialised technique designed to reinforce and stabilise weakened masonry. Our approach involved a combination of helical bars and a two-part resin system, ensuring that the repairs would be both effective and durable. Here’s a detailed look at how we executed these structural repairs:
- Preparation and Marking: Precision was key in this project. We meticulously marked out the locations for our 1-meter helical bars, carefully cutting into the brickwork to a depth of 35mm. To maintain a clean and controlled environment, we used a dust extraction unit. This not only minimised disruption but also ensured that the work area was free of debris, which is crucial for the success of the resin application.
- Resin Application and Bar Installation: Once the joints were cleaned and prepared, we applied a thick bead of resin into the slots. The helical bars were then embedded into this resin, providing a robust reinforcement. After the bars were set, we smoothed over the resin with a second bead, creating a seamless finish. This meticulous process prepared the surface for the final application of lime mortar, which would restore both the structural strength and aesthetic integrity of the brickwork.
- Addressing Additional Repairs: During our assessment, we identified a soldier course above a window that had sagged by approximately 30mm. To prevent any further movement and ensure stability, we used a resin tie. This involved drilling precise holes into the underside of the arch and inserting helical bars with resin. These measures provided crucial reinforcement and helped stabilise the soldier course, ensuring that it would remain secure.
