Our Wall Tie Replacement Process
- Assessment and Planning: We began with a detailed inspection of the building to identify and locate damaged wall ties using advanced metal detection technology.
- Installation of Helical Resin-Ties: New helical resin-ties were installed at specified intervals of 600-450mm, as per project specifications. These ties are known for their strength and resistance to corrosion, providing long-term stability.
- Brickwork Restoration: After installing the new ties, we covered them with lime mortar that matched the existing brickwork colour, ensuring a seamless blend with the original structure.
- Removal of Old Ties: We used metal detection to locate and mark the old, corroded ties for removal. The affected bricks were carefully extracted, the old ties were removed or cut out, and the bricks were reinstalled with fresh lime mortar.
- Final Inspection: Once the replacement was complete, we conducted a thorough inspection using a load testing apparatus to measure the load-bearing capacity of each tie. This ensured that all new ties met the required standards for structural integrity and that the wall’s stability was fully restored.
Lime Mortar Patch Pointing
After completing the critical wall tie replacement, we focused on lime mortar patch pointing, essential for both aesthetics and preservation. This process enhances the building’s appearance while maintaining historical accuracy and structural integrity.
Detailed Colour Selection
We began by walking around the building with the client to select the most suitable mortar colour. Using lime biscuits from the Lime Centre, we matched the new mortar to the existing brickwork, choosing shades ‘Stone’ and ‘Amberley.’
Preparation and Cutting
The client marked areas requiring attention. We used a 5-inch raking blade and dust extraction machine to cut out the affected areas to a depth of 30mm. Each day, we washed down the brickwork to remove residual dust, ensuring a clean surface for the new mortar.
Application of Lime Mortar
With the joints prepared, we filled them with the selected lime mortar colours. The application was precise, ensuring that the new mortar matched the original texture and appearance.
Finishing Touches
To achieve a natural, aged look, we used a piece of softwood to rub over the joints, bringing the grit to the surface. We finished by cleaning the area with a soft brush to refine the appearance of the joints.
